Bury's free Christmas Lights Event is 3pm to 8pm on Thu 19 Nov 2026. There is no switch-on countdown, no tickets, and the stage line-up is still to come.
The Bury St Edmunds Christmas Lights Event runs from 3pm to 8pm on Thursday 19 November 2026, in the town centre. It is free, and there is no ticket.
That second point is the one worth carrying. Our Bury St Edmunds, the business improvement district that runs the night, states it flatly on its event page: “Tickets are not required and there is no ticketing system in place, so please be careful and ignore anyone trying to sell you tickets on social media.”
Updated 3 October: the organiser now confirms there is no switch-on ceremony or countdown (there has not been one since 2019), and adds fairground rides and an afternoon-to-evening stage programme. The line-up is still to be announced.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed on the organiser’s own page: the date, the 3pm to 8pm window, free admission, and stalls. Charity, craft and gift stalls line the Cornhill and the Buttermarket, and the page says the transformation begins when the sun sets. The sun goes down over Bury at around 4pm in the third week of November, so the lit half of the event is the back four hours, not the front.
There is no switch-on moment to wait for. The BID’s own FAQ answers the question most people are searching: “There’s no traditional countdown or switch-on ceremony at the event, the Christmas lights have not had a formal switch on at the event since 2019.” The lights come on as dusk falls, so arrive any time from about 4pm to see them lit.
The page also now promises fairground rides and a stage with performances through the afternoon and evening from local groups, choirs, schools and colleges, plus “a few” food and drink stalls. Not confirmed yet: who is on that stage, and when. The BID says the entertainment “will be announced soon”, pointing at its Facebook and Instagram. For anything else, the named contact is Jackie Regan, the BID’s events manager, on 01284 766258.
The event is put on by Our Bury St Edmunds and supported by Bury St Edmunds Town Council and Shop Safe.
Dogs
Dogs are welcome, on a lead. Bury markets itself as a dog-friendly town and the BID means it. Worth knowing before you commit to it: the Cornhill and the Buttermarket are narrow, and this is the busiest evening either of them sees all year.
Parking, and the two car parks that shut mid-event
The BID points at four long stay car parks: Parkway multi-storey, Ram Meadow, St Andrews long stay and Olding Road. Taking those in turn against West Suffolk Council’s own pages:
- Ram Meadow, IP33 1XP. 823 spaces, the biggest in town, £3.50 all day. Entry closes at 10pm, exit any time.
- Parkway multi-storey, IP33 3BA. 592 spaces, £4.00 all day, 2.2 metre height limit.
- St Andrews long stay, IP33 1TZ. 242 spaces, £4.00 all day.
- Olding Road, IP33 3TA. Free, 373 spaces. It is West Suffolk House’s staff car park and opens to the public at 3.30pm on weekdays, which is half an hour after the event starts. On a Thursday it is free from then until 11pm.
Two town centre car parks lock their barriers while the event is still running, and neither is on the BID’s list: the Arc-Cattlemarket underground level at 6pm and Parkway surface at 6.30pm. If you park in either at 3pm you will be walking back to a shut car park at 7pm.
One more trap. Short stay car parks and on-street bays in Bury are free from 3pm on Tuesdays. The Christmas Lights Event is on a Thursday, so that offer does not apply and short stay charges run to 6pm as normal. Our parking page has the full tariffs and the free windows.
Road closures
None has been published. Suffolk County Council’s statutory temporary traffic orders for the district, which are filed on the Public Notice Portal, carry nothing for the Cornhill, the Buttermarket, Abbeygate Street or Angel Hill on 19 November as at 3 October. An event closure order is normally advertised a few weeks out, so this is expected rather than missing. When it lands it will appear on our roadworks and travel page.
The lights night is also the day the Christmas market opens
The 19th is not a standalone evening. Christmas at Bury St Edmunds, the marquee market in Charter Square at the arc, is booked to open the same day and run to 20 December, according to organiser Eden Crafts. So the stalls on the Cornhill and Buttermarket are the smaller half of what is on that night.
The town’s other festive markets, including the cathedral’s three-day market and the question of whether the old Christmas Fayre is coming back, are on our Bury St Edmunds Christmas markets page.
Note the date has moved. In 2025 the lights event and the market opening were both on Thursday 20 November, St Edmund’s Day. In 2026 they fall on the 19th, the day before.
What this page will say next
When the BID publishes the stage line-up or the stall list, they go here with the source. If a road closure order is advertised, that goes here too.
