Halifax on Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, closed on 30 September with its cash machine. Nearest Halifax is Ipswich; Lloyds on Buttermarket takes your account.
Halifax in Bury St Edmunds has closed. The branch at 58 Cornhill shut for good on Wednesday 30 September 2026, and its 24-hour cash machine closed the same day. By 5 October Halifax had taken both pages down: its branch finder now answers the old address with “the banking location you’re trying to access might have closed” (Halifax branch finder).
Update, Monday 5 October 2026: the nearest Halifax-branded branch is now in Ipswich, and the Lloyds in Newmarket that some Bury customers used as a fallback has its own closure date, 18 March 2027. Where to bank now has the details.
What happens next was settled three months ago, and it has had far less attention. The cash network LINK assessed Bury St Edmunds and recommended no additional services at all. No banking hub. No new deposit counter. Nothing.
Halifax’s own page still tells customers that “LINK will publish the outcome of this review”. LINK published it on 10 June 2026.
Halifax Bury St Edmunds has closed: where to bank now
Your account number, sort code, card and PIN carry on working; only the building has gone. These are the options, all checked on the banks’ own branch pages on 5 October 2026.
| Option | Where | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lloyds Bank | 9 Buttermarket, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1DB | Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9.30am to 3.30pm; Wed 10am to 3.30pm; Sat 9.30am to 1pm | Counter and paying-in machine, no cash machine listed; no closure notice |
| Post Office | 15 Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds | Mon to Sat 9am to 5.30pm; Sun closed | Cash withdrawals up to £300 a day, cash and cheque deposits |
| Halifax Ipswich | 4/8 Buttermarket, Ipswich IP1 1DS | Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9.30am to 4.30pm; Wed 10am to 4.30pm; Sat 9.30am to 3pm | Nearest Halifax-branded branch; has a cash machine; no closure notice |
| Lloyds Mildenhall Banking Hub | The Pavillion, Recreation Way, Mildenhall IP28 7HG | Check before travelling | Staffed by a community banker, per Halifax |
| Lloyds Newmarket | 48 High Street, Newmarket CB8 8LF | Closed Tuesdays | “Due to close permanently on 18/03/27” |
Halifax’s branch finder for Suffolk now lists Lloyds branches alongside its own, because the two brands are merging. Of the Halifax-branded branches left in the county, Ipswich has no closure date, while Halifax Lowestoft, 150 London Road North, is “due to close permanently on 29 October 2026”. For anyone in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich is about 25 miles away by the A14, so for most everyday banking the Lloyds on Buttermarket and the Post Office on Cornhill are the practical choices.
For cash out of hours, the Halifax machine on Cornhill is gone. Use LINK’s cash machine locator for the nearest free-to-use machine; the Lloyds on Buttermarket does not list one.
Halifax Bury St Edmunds: the last days and what closes
Everything in this section is from Halifax’s own branch and cash machine pages as they read on 28 September 2026, two days before the closure. Both pages have since been taken down.
| Halifax, 58 Cornhill, IP33 1BT | |

| Last opening hours | Tuesday 29 September 9.30am to 3.30pm; Wednesday 30 September 10am to 3.30pm |
| Former hours | Closed Monday; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm; Wednesday 10am to 3.30pm; Saturday 9.30am to 1pm |
| 24-hour cash machine | Closed permanently on 30 September 2026 |

| Nearest Lloyds-group branch | Lloyds, 9 Buttermarket, IP33 1DB |
| Nearest banking hub | Lloyds Mildenhall Banking Hub, IP28 7HG |
| Nearest Post Office | 15 Cornhill, Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm, closed Sunday |
Losing the machine matters more than it looks. It was a talking cash machine that dispensed £5 notes, and the Lloyds branch Halifax sends customers to lists a paying-in machine and a counter among its facilities but no cash machine. For cash outside banking hours since 30 September, the Post Office counter covers withdrawals up to £300 a day while it is open; out of hours, LINK’s cash machine locator shows the nearest free-to-use machine.
What LINK actually decided
LINK runs the assessment the Financial Conduct Authority requires whenever a bank branch closes. It publishes every outcome in a spreadsheet on its own website, updated on 11 September 2026. The Bury St Edmunds row reads:
- Local area: Bury St Edmunds
- Type of assessment: Branch Closure
- Cash facility: Halifax, 58 Cornhill, IP33 1BT
- Expected date of closure: 30 September 2026
- Published date: 10 June 2026
- Minimum expected facility: No additional services
That last line is the decision. When LINK does recommend something, the rules bite hard: new services “should open within 12 weeks of our recommendation if none exist already”, and “branches will stay open until the new service is ready, so some closure dates may change” (LINK).
Neither applied here. Nothing was recommended, so nothing had to be built, and the branch closed on the date Halifax gave.
Three assessments, three times nothing
This is the third time in eighteen months that LINK has looked at cash access in this district and concluded that no extra service is needed. The same spreadsheet records:
- Santander, 57 Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, a change in service level from 30 June 2025, published 19 March 2025. Outcome: no additional services.
- NatWest, 18 High Street, Newmarket, a branch closure on 24 September 2025, published 9 June 2025. Outcome: no additional services.
- Halifax, 58 Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, closing 30 September 2026. Outcome: no additional services.
Newmarket is about 14 miles west of Bury St Edmunds and is a separate town, but it sits in the same West Suffolk district and the same LINK dataset.
Where Halifax says to go instead
Halifax’s branch page lists two alternatives, and only two.
- Lloyds Bank, 9 Buttermarket, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1DB. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm, Wednesday 10am to 3.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to 1pm. It has a counter, a paying-in machine and over-the-counter euros and US dollars, and no closure notice of its own (Lloyds).
- Lloyds Bank Mildenhall Banking Hub, The Pavillion, Recreation Way, Mildenhall IP28 7HG, staffed by a community banker.
Read the second one twice. Mildenhall is about 11 miles north west of Cornhill in a straight line, and further by road. It is a different town with its own high street. If you cannot get to a branch in Bury St Edmunds, a banking hub in Mildenhall is not a local alternative.
The Halifax cash machine at 58 Cornhill is listed by the bank as a separate 24-hour location rather than as part of the branch. When we first checked on 12 September its page did not say whether it would survive the branch. By 28 September it did: it closes permanently on 30 September too.
The bigger change behind the closure
The Bury St Edmunds branch is not being lost in isolation. Halifax is being wound into Lloyds as a brand.
“Halifax has been part of the same family as Lloyds for many years, alongside Bank of Scotland. Over the coming months, the Halifax brand is changing to Lloyds,” the bank says on its own site (Halifax).
What Halifax says stays the same:
- account numbers, sort codes, policy numbers and roll numbers
- card details and PINs
- standing orders and direct debits
- payments and repayments
What changes:
- the brand on your accounts and policies, “over time”, with notice each time
- the Halifax app and online banking, which the bank is closing. Customers will be invited inside the app to move to the Lloyds app instead.
There is a fraud warning attached to all of it, and it is worth repeating in full: “Any action will always start in your app or online banking, not from a link, message or call. If someone is asking you to do something another way, it’s not us, it’s a fraudster.” Halifax says it will never ask you to log in using a link or QR code, never ask for personal details by phone, text or email, and never ask you to move your money.
What the Post Office can and cannot do
Halifax directs customers to the Post Office, banking hubs and PayPoint stores for everyday banking. Bury St Edmunds has a Post Office counter at 15 Cornhill, a few doors from the branch that is closing.
The limits are Halifax’s own (Halifax):
- Free cash withdrawals up to £300 a day with a debit card and PIN. These count towards your £800 daily cash machine limit, so £300 over the counter leaves you £500 at a machine the same day.
- Pay in cash up to £2,995 a month and £20,000 a year, per person, using a debit card. Instant access once counted.
- Deposit cheques, but you need a cheque envelope from the Post Office and a paying-in slip ordered from the bank. Allow up to two working days for the money to arrive.
- Check your balance at the counter with card and PIN.
- Coins below £1 only in full coin bags. £1 and £2 coins are taken loose in partial bags. Maximum £250 in any single deposit.
- Every Post Office has its own cut-off time for cash paid in. Ask at the counter.
What is left in the town centre
Our Bury St Edmunds, the town centre business improvement district, lists nine banks and building societies in its own directory. With the Halifax gone since 30 September, that leaves:
- Barclays, 21/22 Cornhill IP33 1DY. Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to 1pm. Barclays flags that on Saturdays “this branch has a self-service counter only”, with no large cash or coin transactions and no temporary debit cards (Barclays).
- NatWest, 7 Cornhill IP33 1BQ.
- Lloyds, 9 Buttermarket IP33 1DB.
- HSBC, 54 Abbeygate Street IP33 1LJ.
- Santander, 57 Abbeygate Street IP33 1LQ, on the reduced service level LINK recorded from 30 June 2025.
- Nationwide, 11 Buttermarket IP33 1DE, The Cambridge Building Society, 29 Buttermarket IP33 1DB, and Yorkshire Building Society, 1 Abbeygate Street IP33 1UN (Our Bury St Edmunds).
That is a better-served high street than most market towns of this size, and it is the reason LINK found no gap to fill. It is not much comfort if the Halifax is the one you use.
What it means for you
- The branch has gone. Halifax at 58 Cornhill closed on Wednesday 30 September 2026, and so did its cash machine.
- There will be no banking hub in Bury St Edmunds. LINK decided that on 10 June 2026 and published it. There is nothing to wait for.
- The nearest banking hub is in Mildenhall, about 11 miles away. Plan a journey, not a walk.
- Your account details do not change, now or when the brand switches to Lloyds. Account number, sort code, card, PIN, direct debits: all the same.
- If you use the Halifax app, expect an invitation inside the app to move to Lloyds. It will start in the app. Anything that starts with a text, an email link or a phone call is not the bank.
- For cash, the Post Office at 15 Cornhill is the nearest everyday counter, within the limits above. It is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.30pm, and closed on Sunday (Post Office).
- The nearest Halifax-branded branch is Ipswich, 4/8 Buttermarket, and Lloyds in Newmarket closes on 18 March 2027, so do not plan around it for the long term.
- Heading into town for the Lloyds or the Post Office? Check parking in Bury St Edmunds and the roadworks page first.
